เปิดสตูชมงาน / Open Studio with artist Kerri Ammirata, NYC.

Ne-Na Contemporary is pleased to invite you to an open studio of the current artist-in-residence Kerri Ammirata. Ammirata has spent the past four weeks creating new drawings and wood carvings.

Ammirata’s work explores the complexities between the mundane and the sacred; deconstructing the iconography and ritual between Catholicism, Christianity, and American secular spiritualism. Since arriving in Thailand, she has been researching and absorbing the cultural rituals of Thai daily life as well as investigating the similarities and differences of Theravada Buddhism and her Christian upbringing. Each morning of her residency, she lights three candles on a carved wood step stool to highlight the similarity of the Buddhist and Catholic ritual of prayer and intention.

Ammirata, mostly a painter, came to Chiang Mai to deepen her knowledge of wood carving. She has been immersed in the large community and rich tradition of wood carving within Chiang Mai and will present six new carvings at the open studios.

The open studio is organized by Ne-Na Contemporary, Shukit Panmongkol, curator and Samak Kosem, guest coordinator.

About the Artist:
Kerri Ammirata is a New York City-based artist born in Long Island and partly raised in the Midwest. She earned her MFA from Boston University in 2010 and a BA from Anderson University in 2006. She had her first solo show ‘Deep in the Knowing’ at Space776 in Brooklyn in 2018. She is the recipient of the following awards and residencies: Golden Foundation for the Arts (2019), Ne’Na Contemporary Art Space/Monfai Cultural Center Residency (2019), NYCT Cultural Advocacy & Equity Program (2015); Vermont Studio Center Clowes Full Fellowship (2012); HUB-BUB Full Fellowship (2010-2011); and Chautauqua School of Art, Full Scholarship (2005 and 2006).

นี่นะ พื้นที่ศิลปะร่วมสมัย/บ้านม่อนฝ้าย ขอเรียนเชิญท่านร่วมงานเปิดสตูดิโอของศิลปินในพำนัก Kerri Ammirata ซึ่งเธอได้มาทำงานเมื่อ 4 อาทิตย์กว่าๆที่ผ่านมาโดยได้สร้างสรรค์งานภาพเขียนและงานแกะสลักไม้ ผลงานของ Ammirata เป็นการค้นหาความซับซ้อนระหว่างโลกวิสัยและความศักดิ์สิทธิ์ การรื้อโครงสร้างการเขียนภาพสัญลักษณ์และพิธีกรรมของนิกายโรมันคาทอลิก กับ คริสต์ศาสนา และแนวคิดจิตวิญญาณทางเลือกแบบตะวันตก โดยนับตั้งแต่ที่เธอได้มาถึงเมืองไทย เธอได้ค้นคว้าและซึมซับเอาพิธีกรรมทางวัฒนธรรมในชีวิตประจำวันของไทย พร้อมๆ กับสำรวจหาความเหมือนและความต่างของพุทธเถรวาทกับคริสต์ศาสนาที่เธอนับถือมาตั้งแต่วัยเด็ก โดยทุกๆ เช้าในช่วงพำนักอยู่ที่เชียงใหม่ เธอจุดเทียน 3 เล่มบนแท่นไม้แกะสลักเพื่อชี้ถึงความละม้ายคล้ายคลึงของพิธีกรรมต่อการอธิษฐานและมนสิการในแบบพุทธและคาทอลิก

Ammirata ทำงานจิตกรรมเป็นหลัก การมาเชียงใหม่ทำให้เธอได้ศึกษาและเรียนรู้งานแกะสลักไม้อย่างลึกซึ้ง เธอได้คลุกคลีอยู่กับสังคมที่มีประเพณีอันทรงคุณค่าด้านการแกะสลักไม้ อย่างกว้างขวางในเชียงใหม่และจึงภูมิใจเสนอผลงานแกะสลักไม้ทั้ง 6 ชิ้นของเธอในงานเปิดสตูดิโอครั้งนี้ งานเปิดสตูดิโอนี้จัดโดย นี่นะ พื้นที่ศิลปะร่วมสมัยโดยชูกิจ ปานมงคล ภัณฑรักษ์และสมัคร์ กอเซม ผู้ประสารงานรับเชิญ

เกี่ยวกับศิลปิน Kerri Ammirata เป็นศิลปินทำงานอยู่ในกรุงนิวยอร์ค บ้านเกิดของเธออยู่ในลอง ไอร์แลนด์ และใช้ชีวิตเติบโดอยู่ในเมืองมิดเวสต์ เธอได้รับการศึกษาปริญญาโทด้านศิลปะจากมหาวิทยาลัยบอสตันในปี 2553 และปริญญาตรีจากมหาวิทยาลัยแอนเดอร์สันในปี 2549 เธอจัดแสดงงานเดี่ยวครั้งแรกชื่อว่า Deep in the Knowing’ ที่ Space776 ในบรู๊คลิน ปี 2561 เธอได้รับรางวัลและทุนศิลปินในพำนักมากมาย ได้แก่ Golden Foundation for the Arts (2019), Ne’Na Contemporary Art Space/Monfai Cultural Center Residency (2019), NYCT Cultural Advocacy & Equity Program (2015); ทุนเต็มจำนวนของ Vermont Studio Center Clowes (2012) ทุนเต็มจำนวนของ HUB-BUB (2010-2011) และทุนเต็มจำนวนของ Chautauqua School of Art (2005 and 2006).
